Press Release - Sunday Mercury (Birmingham UK) - Harris & Spilsbury Ltd - Feb 28th 1999

In the world of plastic bags Harris & Spilsbury Ltd have got everything wrapped up. The company specializes in food wrappers and bags as well as making the humble supermarket carrier bag. Managing Director David Dowler said: "We produce all sorts of bags for food, magazines and newspapers. "Nuts and raisins are packed in our bags and some of the food at Marks & Spencer is too. We've also produced wraps for the Daily Telegraph which offered free curries to readers."
Each week it makes around 1 million bags at its factory in Ward End, Birmingham. Its a long way from the firm's humble beginnings in a garage in Hodge Hill, Birmingham, where Geoff Harris and Ralph Spilsbury started the company in 1968. They both retired in 1983 and Mr Dowler bought the company from them. He said: "Mr Harris worked for a PVC company in Coventry which was just down the road from Massey Ferguson, the makers of tractors and combined harvesters.
"Massey Ferguson approached the PVC company to ask if they could make polythene wallets for the user manuals to stop them getting dirty. "The boss of the company was not interested but Mr Harris asked if he could make them instead. He got the go-ahead and started to supply the wallets, enlisting the help of his brother-in-law Ralph to pack the manuals." Eventually the business grew so big that Mr Harris left his job and devoted himself full time to his burgeoning enterprise. Two machines were bought to produce wraps from huge rolls of low density polythene and the company was on its way. Now it has five machines which produce up to a million wrappers and bags per week.
"We built a new factory two years ago," said Mr Dowler, "and now we can manufacture product more efficiently."
"Production varies a lot," said Mr Dowler, "we do all kinds of bags and there's not much we cannot do."
